How To Study The Bible?
There is no right or wrong
way to study the Bible, but here are a few suggestions
The idea of personal Bible study is simple but requires
discipline and long-term goals. I want to share with you steps for Bible study that
will give you a pattern to follow.
Develop a plan on how you will approach reading through the
Bible, Unlike most books, you will probably not read it straight through from cover to
cover.
Here's a plan for reading the Old Testament:
I suggest reading through all of it once a year in a narrative manner from (Genesis to
Malachi, no skipping around). There are some difficult portions. Thus the best way
to read the Old Testament is straight through, like a story. What is the best way to
organize your reading of the Old Testament? One simple plan is this. There are 929
chapters in the entire Old Testament. Divide 929 by 365 days and you come up with merely
two-and-a-half chapters a day. To allow for occasional days when you miss due to
illness or other problems, set a goal of at least three chapters a day, which should take
an average of 15 to 20 minutes. Keep in mind that some chapters are quite long, others are
very short. The average chapter usually occupies about a page in a typical Bible, so
the goal of three chapters a day is definitely not overwhelming.
Here's a plan for reading the New Testament:
Instead of reading through the entire New Testament from Matthew to Revelation, I read
each book over and over for thirty days. This works beautifully with the shorter books,
for the longer books such as John, which has twenty-one chapters divide it onto three
sections of seven chapters each, and read the first seven chapters every day for thirty
days, after thirty days read the next seven chapters every day for thirty days and so on.
Vary the length of the books you tackle, first a short one, then a long one, then back to
a couple of short ones. In two-and-a-half years you will cover the entire New
Testament thirty times.
