What Does the Bible say about some of these
everyday issuses?
Death - Even
though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are
with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. (Psalm 23:4)
A good name is better than fine perfume, and the
day of death better than the day of birth. It is better to go to a house of
mourning than to go to a house of feasting, for death is the destiny of every man;
the living should take this to heart. (Ecclesiastes 7:1,2)
For if, when we were God's enemies, we were reconciled to
him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we
be saved through his life!
(Romans
5:10)
We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death
in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the
Father, we too may live a new life. (Romans 6:4)
For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God
is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 6:23)
because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life
set me free from the law of sin and death. (Romans 8:2)
For if you live according to the sinful nature, you will
die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live,
(Romans 8:13)
For since death came through a man, the
resurrection of the dead comes also through a man. For as in Adam all die, so in Christ
all will be made alive. But each in his own turn: Christ, the firstfruits; then, when he
comes, those who belong to him. Then the end will come, when he hands over the kingdom to
God the Father after he has destroyed all dominion, authority and power. (1 Corinthians 15:21-24)
Therefore let us leave the elementary teachings about
Christ and go on to maturity, not laying again the foundation of repentance from acts that
lead to death, and of faith in God, (Hebrews 6:1)
By faith Enoch was taken from this life, so that he did
not experience death; he could not be found, because God had taken him away. For
before he was taken, he was commended as one who pleased God. (Hebrews
11:5)
Brothers, we do not want you to be ignorant about those
who fall asleep, or to grieve like the rest of men, who have no hope. We believe that
Jesus died and rose again and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have
fallen asleep in him. According to the Lord's own word, we tell you that we who are still
alive, who are left till the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have
fallen asleep. For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with
the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will
rise first. After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together
with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord
forever. Therefore encourage each other with these words. (1Thessalonians
4:13-18)
Depression - Elijah
was afraid and ran for his life. When he came to Beersheba in Judah, he left his servant
there, while he himself went a day's journey into the desert. He came to a broom tree, sat
down under it and prayed that he might die. "I have had enough, LORD," he said.
"Take my life; I am no better than my ancestors." Then he lay down under the
tree and fell asleep. All at once an angel touched him and said, "Get up and
eat." He looked around, and there by his head was a cake of bread baked over hot
coals, and a jar of water. He ate and drank and then lay down again. The angel of the LORD
came back a second time and touched him and said, "Get up and eat, for the journey is
too much for you." So he got up and ate and drank. Strengthened by that food, he
traveled forty days and forty nights until he reached Horeb, the mountain of God. There he
went into a cave and spent the night. And the word of the LORD came to him: "What are
you doing here, Elijah?" (1 Kings 19:3-9)
