What Does the Bible say about some of these
everyday issuses?
Giving to Others
- Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows
generously will also reap generously. Each man should give what he has decided in his
heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And
God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things at all times, having
all that you need, you will abound in every good work. As it is written: "He has
scattered abroad his gifts to the poor; his righteousness endures forever." Now he
who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store
of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness. You will be made rich in every
way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will
result in thanksgiving to God. This service that you perform is not only supplying the
needs of God's people but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God.
Because of the service by which you have proved yourselves, men will praise God for the
obedience that accompanies your confession of the gospel of Christ, and for your
generosity in sharing with them and with everyone else. And in their prayers for you their
hearts will go out to you, because of the surpassing grace God has given you. Thanks be to
God for his indescribable gift! (2 Corinthians 9:6-15)
Gossip - A gossip
betrays a confidence, but a trustworthy man keeps a secret. (Proverbs
11:13)
A perverse man stirs up dissension, and a gossip separates
close friends. (Proverbs 16:28)
The words of a gossip are like choice morsels; they
go down to a man's inmost parts. (Proverbs 18:8)
A gossip betrays a confidence; so avoid a man who
talks too much. (Proverbs 20:19)
Government - Every person must be subject to the governing authorities, for no authority
exists except by God's permission. The existing authorities have been established by God,
so that whoever resists the authorities opposes what God has established, and those who
resist will bring judgment on themselves. For the authorities are not a terror to good
conduct, but to bad. Would you like to live without being afraid of the authorities? Then
do what is right, and you will receive their approval. For they are God's servants working
for your good. But if you do what is wrong, you should be afraid, for it is not without
reason that they bear the sword. Indeed, they are God's servants to execute wrath on
anyone who does wrong. (Romans 1:1-5)
Happiness
- To the man who pleases him, God gives wisdom, knowledge and happiness, but to
the sinner he gives the task of gathering and storing up wealth to hand it over to the one
who pleases God. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.
(Ecclesiastes 2:26)
A psalm. A song. For the Sabbath day. It is good to praise
the LORD and make music to your name, O Most High, to proclaim your love in the morning
and your faithfulness at night, to the music of the ten-stringed lyre and the melody of
the harp. For you make me glad by your deeds, O LORD; I sing for joy at the works of your
hands. How great are your works, O LORD, how profound your thoughts! The senseless man
does not know, fools do not understand, that though the wicked spring up like grass and
all evildoers flourish, they will be forever destroyed. But you, O LORD, are exalted
forever. For surely your enemies, O LORD, surely your enemies will perish; all evildoers
will be scattered. You have exalted my horn like that of a wild ox; fine oils have been
poured upon me. My eyes have seen the defeat of my adversaries; my ears have heard the
rout of my wicked foes. The righteous will flourish like a palm tree, they will grow like
a cedar of Lebanon; planted in the house of the LORD, they will flourish in the courts of
our God. They will still bear fruit in old age, they will stay fresh and green,
proclaiming, "The LORD is upright; he is my Rock, and there is no wickedness in
him." (Psalm 92)
