What Does the Bible say about some of these
everyday issuses?
Prayer
- When they heard this, they raised their voices together in prayer to God.
"Sovereign Lord," they said, "you made the heaven and the earth and the
sea, and everything in them. You spoke by the Holy Spirit through the mouth of your
servant, our father David: "'Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain?
The kings of the earth take their stand and the rulers gather together against the Lord
and against his Anointed One.' Indeed Herod and Pontius Pilate met together with the
Gentiles and the people of Israel in this city to conspire against your holy servant
Jesus, whom you anointed. They did what your power and will had decided beforehand should
happen. Now, Lord, consider their threats and enable your servants to speak your word with
great boldness. Stretch out your hand to heal and perform miraculous signs and wonders
through the name of your holy servant Jesus." (Acts 4:24-30)
"And
when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the
synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have
received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door
and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret,
will reward you. And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think
they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask
him. "This, then, is how you should pray: "'Our
Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come,
your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today
our daily bread. Forgive us our debts, as we also have
forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but
deliver us from the evil one.' For if you forgive men when
they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. (Matthew 6:5-14)
If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask
for in prayer." (Matthew 21:22)
A man in the crowd answered, "Teacher, I brought you
my son, who is possessed by a spirit that has robbed him of speech. Whenever it seizes
him, it throws him to the ground. He foams at the mouth, gnashes his teeth and becomes
rigid. I asked your disciples to drive out the spirit, but they could not." "O unbelieving generation," Jesus replied, "how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you?
Bring the boy to me." So they brought him. When the spirit saw Jesus, it
immediately threw the boy into a convulsion. He fell to the ground and rolled around,
foaming at the mouth. Jesus asked the boy's father, "How long
has he been like this?" "From childhood," he answered. "It has
often thrown him into fire or water to kill him. But if you can do anything, take pity on
us and help us." "'If you can'?" said Jesus. "Everything is possible for him who believes."
Immediately the boy's father exclaimed, "I do believe; help me overcome my
unbelief!" When Jesus saw that a crowd was running to the scene, he rebuked the evil
spirit. "You deaf and mute spirit," he said, "I command you, come out of him and never enter him again."
The spirit shrieked, convulsed him violently and came out. The boy looked so much like a
corpse that many said, "He's dead." But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted
him to his feet, and he stood up. After Jesus had gone indoors, his disciples asked him
privately, "Why couldn't we drive it out?" He replied, "This
kind can come out only by prayer." (Mark
9:17-29)
Self-Control - Like a
city whose walls are broken down is a man who lacks self-control. (Proverbs 25:28)
Do not deprive each other except by mutual consent and for
a time, so that you may devote yourselves to prayer. Then come together again so that
Satan will not tempt you because of your lack of self-control. (1 Corinthians 7:5)
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience,
kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things
there is no law. (Galatians5:22,23)
For this very reason, make every effort to add to your
faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control,
perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, brotherly kindness;
and to brotherly kindness, love. For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure,
they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord
Jesus Christ. But if anyone does not have them, he is nearsighted and blind, and has
forgotten that he has been cleansed from his past sins. Therefore, my brothers, be all the
more eager to make your calling and election sure. For if you do these things, you will
never fall, and you will receive a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and
Savior Jesus Christ. (2 Peter 1:5-11)
Self-Image - Do not
lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices and have put
on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator. (Colossians 3:9,10)
So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is
unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal. (2 Corinthians 4:18)
